Since my return to Southampton

I have again consulted Dr. Macdonald, C.B. (Deputy Inspector-General, Professor of Military and Tropical Medicine at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Netley), who has given me the certificate enclosed with a view of saving me, if possible, a journey to London during this inclement weather. I venture respectfully to request that this certificate may be considered sufficient, but if it is still thought desirable that I should consult Sir Ranald Martin, I will at once proceed to Town for that purpose.

Your Lordship will observe that Dr. Maclear advises that I should not arrive in Hongkong until the end of September, and his opinion being strongly seconded by others who are well acquainted with that climate, I would respectfully beg that my leave of absence should extend to that date, it being optional for me to return before that time should the thorough restoration of my health permit.

If this indulgence be granted, I have every reasonable prospect of a lengthened stay in Hongkong, where until quite recently I have always enjoyed excellent health.

I have the honor to be, My Lord, Your Lordship's Most Obedient & humble servant

[Signature]

Right Honorable

The Earl of Kimberley

Crown Solicitor of Hongkong...

Secretary of State for the Colonies
